Below one of my favourite stories:
想像してください。海の中で、こんなに堂々として美しい生き物の隣にいたら自分がどんなにちっぽけな存在に思えるだろうと。
そう、クジラの話です。先日、サンフランシスコ・クロニクル紙の第一面に、カニ漁用のクモの巣状のわなに絡まってしまったメスのザトウクジラの記事が載りました。
50キロか60キロもあるわなに引っ張られ、必死になって水面から顔を出そうとしているところを、ファラロン諸島（ゴールデンゲートブリッジのそば）の東側で漁師に発見されました。
体や尾ひれ、お腹にも100メートル近いロープが絡まり、口に挟まったロープで頭がぐいっと後ろに引っ張られていました
漁師はすぐに無線で環境グループに助けを求め、数時間後、救助チームが到着しました。救助チームは、「ひどく弱っているから、救い出すには、ダイバーがもぐってロープを解いてやるしかない」と決めました。
ダイバーたちは何時間もかけてナイフを使ってわなやロープを切り、とうとうクジラは自由になりました。ダイバーたちの話によると、クジラは自由になると、楽しそうに輪を描いて泳ぎ、それが済むとダイバーたちのところに戻って来て、まるで「ありがとう」と言っているかのように、一人一人を軽くつついたり、優しく押したりしたそうです。
「今まで生きてきた中で一番信じられないほど美しい経験でした」と言ったダイバーも何人かいました。
口に挟まっていたロープを切ったダイバーは、「ロープを切っている間中、クジラが僕の動きを目で追っていました。
これからの人生がまるごと変わるくらいの出来事でした」と言っています。
